They did come and i told them the situation and even spoke with the manager and he said he would take it up with my EX.
now my ex. keep texting saying rent-a-center got permission from him to call the police on me, i have texts messages that he sent saying the computer was mine!! His name is on the contract, not mine.

What you don't understand is, it is rental property of RAC until payoff. Unfortunately the best solution would to give back the merchandise.
A ) it can be considered stolen. B) it's the right thing to do and C) it's just a laptop not worth the trouble
Just tell rent a center he took it back from you and if they keep harassing you you and your lawyer will see them in court.
Alot of you idiots don't know your rights. It all depends on a few thinghow long you have been paying on it and if you have actually paid the real value of the computer.
If he has paid what the computer is worth they can't do *** about it. Its rightfully your that's a secret they will not tell you. But they can sell the balance to a collection agency.
And for all you idiots how say I'm wrong say that to my couch set sitting in my living room. :p :p :sigh but pls do not try this on the first week of paying you have to pay the value or your *** is grass
yea this is messed up but guess what is really *** up i was renting a tablet from rac and it got stolen out of my car and i took them the police report and they told me that i would still have to pay on the *** thing pretty messed up i gota pay on somthing that i dont even have this is bullsh** what do u think i should do about this
simply tell them he gave it to you and you no longer have it ... possession is not 9/10th of the law proof of it is...
they have to prove you have it ... he signed the contract, this is not a car and is not covered under the same legal issues. He is an *** ....
make him pay it off... and tell RAC you simply do not have it anymore....
The boyfriend would have to report the computer stolen and obviously he gave it to her as a gift so it's not stolen. You can't make a false police report.
Call a lawyer they will tell you the same thing.
Keep it. It's a gift he wanted you to have or he wouldn't have gave it to you in the first place.

Ownership is 9/10's of the law. He can't do anything.
im a manager at rent a center if the manager files for a repossesion suit all he need is a address. to file the suit. and the sheriff will pick up the laptop.
Ok. that's mighty *** of you to keep olding something that clearly has an owner.
You would not do that with... lets say a CAR... now wold you. NO that would be theft in any amount of words you like to use.
Even if your bone-headed ex boyfriend gave you that computer as a gift. lets take that car, for instance, the bank would retreive that car back some how or YOU won't be driving it. either no insurance or tag's etc. Now why would you attempt to keep something as trivial as that.
under any other LAw is consider "theft by receiving" or Possession of Stole nproperty. reconsider and do the right thing and be a 21st century woman and get you own computer.
THANKS IDONTCRY, YOU WAS RIGHT, RENT A CENTER CAN'T DO ANYTHING TO ME, I WHEN UP THERE AND TALKED TO THEM AND I ALSO TALKED TO A LAWERY. THANKS FOR YOU COMMENT YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU WAS TALKING ABOUT!!
Ok....if you say so.
Don't listen to the crazy obvious acct mngr above...yes, mr. helper, we know the rules...listen...screw the ex...his name is on the contract...if they show up, tell them to get lost, or just call the cops on them.
They cannot bother YOU over anything he signed.
I worked for RAC for a long enough time to know what your rights are at this point. Direct the company to him, and ask to not be contacted anymore...trust me, there are NO criminal charges facing either of you, because RAC operates outside of the law anyway.
If his name is on the contract & he wants to give the computer back you'll have to give it up for these reasons:
1. If the computer is not paid in full then the merchandise still belongs to rent a center.
2. If he doesn't return it they can file charges on him (same as stolen merchandise).
Unless you can convince him to either continue making payments on it or get the computer changed over to your name & make payments yourself I don't see any alternative but to give it back. :)
